What are SATs?

SATs are the most common form of college-readiness test (to be distinguished from ACT). SATs (previously known as Scholastic Aptitude/Assessment Test) are designed to be up-to-date assessments reflecting what you have learned at school; because of this they are regularly updated, mirroring any changes in the school curriculum.
The tests are comprised of three main subject areas: critical reading, mathematics and writing. SATs are relatively inexpensive and are designed to be simple but comprehensive tests of student’s abilities.

How do SAT scores win you college scholarships

SATs are a key factor in deciding a college’s selection of students. Some colleges offer guaranteed SAT scholarships. Schools vary, so it’s always worth doing your research – ask them directly if and how much SAT scores matter for getting in their college.
Many people apply for college scholarships, so colleges want to efficiently sort and filter applications to get the most suitable students. A test reflecting what a student has learned is an effective way of assessing a student’s abilities. In theory, it is simple for the student and simple for the college. For this reason, most colleges use SAT scores in deciding which students to accept. In addition, some colleges use SAT scores to decide the amount of merit aid a student receives. Merit aid is a form of financial aid irresponsive of need.

Most college bound students take the PSAT in the fall of their junior year. Many students may not know that the test is a qualifying test from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Most schools have their own rules pertaining to merit scholarships. Many are specific about the requirements. As an example, Baylor University offers a scholarship of over $40,000 to students who score over 1,500 on their SAT and meets some other requirements.
