Spring Standardized Testing Changes

It’s hard to keep up with all the changing information surrounding college applications and standardized testing right now.  That’s what we’re here for – to help you understand it all, and to guide you on what to do next.

Here’s what we know so far:

Test Cancellation All testing on June 6, 2020 has been cancelled. That includes both the regular SAT and the SAT Subject Tests. High school juniors will thus need to complete any required standardized testing in the second half of the year. The April PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 have also been cancelled.

New SAT Date – Collegeboard is planning to add an additional testing date September, in addition to the regularly scheduled dates of August 29, October 3, November 7, and December 5. The exact date of the September test will be announced later, but students can register for any of these tests starting in May.

Expanded Capacity – One concern with the cancelled tests is the high possibility of testing centers filling up as more students are forced to take the test in the fall. Collegeboard is planning on expanding their capacity to administer the test, and has been reaching out to schools and testing centers to increase their capacity to ensure that every student has the chance to take the tests and no one gets shut out.

Early Access – Students who were registered for the June test or are in the graduating class of 2021 and don’t have SAT test scores will be allowed to register early for the August, September, and October testing dates. This should help make sure that all students can take the test at least once, even if the planned capacity increases are not enough.

SAT School Day Administration – All spring school SATs have been cancelled, but there is a possibility that many districts will be running the school SATs in the fall. Students can check with their local school districts for more information about how this will apply to them.

Future Testing and the Possibility of Online SAT – It is still unclear at this point what school will look like for many students in the fall. There is the possibility (slight though it may be) that schools will not have returned to in-person learning by the fall. If this is the case, the SAT will move to a digital form. For a sense of what that would look like, our best information comes from what Collegeboard has already done with the online AP tests. We will keep you updated on any developments we see on that front, including guidance on how to best prepare for a digital test instead of a paper test.
